Lot Essay

The Horatio breakfast-service, referred to by Lady Hamilton in her diary, was ordered by Lord Nelson at the time of their visit to the works in August 1802. The original order lists '6 chocolate cups and stands, complete', at a cost of six guineas. Cf. Geoffrey A.Godden, Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain 1788-1852, pl. 118 and pl. 117 for the teapot bearing the full coat-of-arms sold in these Rooms on 22 July 1969, lot 142. A muffin-warmer from the service was sold in these Rooms on 9 February 1981, lot 108 and a coffee-cup and saucer on 17 December 1984, lot 177
