Lot Essay

The model for this pair has been attributed by F. Souchal to a design by Corneille van Clève (1646-1732) and is referred to in the inventory drawn up after his death on page 402 (F. Souchal, French Sculptors, the reign of Louis XIV, London, 1987, vol. III, p. 398, no. 72).

A pair of candlesticks of closely related design was sold in the sale of the Collection du Marquis de Marigny, March 1782, lot 574.
