Lot Essay

A closely related coromandel lacquer commode by Jean-Baptiste Fromageau, with similar angle-mounts, identical sabots and of rectilinear form was sold anonymously at Sotheby's, Monaco, 16 June 1990, lot 853, while the stylised acanthus-spray apron mount is shared by that on a commode by Claude-Charles Saunier (see P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 772). The unusual Greek-key frieze to the angle-mounts are displayed in the work of Léonard Boudin (cf. the petit secrètaire illustrated in S. Eriksen, Early Neo-Classicism in France, London, 1974, fig. 109
