with crystal case and front cover, typical hatched and scalloped design to the edge of the bezel and rim of the case, the dial plate with finely engraved symbols of the Passion depicting Christ tied by the wrists to a pillar at VI, a scourge at IX, a sponge, a hammer, callipers and a spear at III, and a cockerel with a vinegar pitcher at XII, the raised silver dial with enamelled Roman chapter ring, central engraved urban scene, single blue steel hand, the signed frosted gilt fusee cruciform movement with finely chased, engraved and pierced furniture to the top plate in floral design, blue steel click wheel and facetted click spring, two-armed steel balance with no hairspring, gut lines to the fusee, turned baluster pillars, with a length of chain and contemporary silver and gilt crank key, with eighteenth entury silver travelling case, silk lined and with an eighteenth century depiction of the crucifix.

Zacharie Fonnereau is recorded in Dictionnaire des Horlogers Francais, by Tardy, page 232, as originating in Geneva, moved to Lyons in 1618, then to La Rochelle where he became master in 1641.
