Lot Essay

The picturesque mosaic plaque of the Colosseum, incorporating a cross within an arch, was inspired by the same engraving as that illustrated in D. Petochi, I Mosaici Minuti Romani, Rome 1981, p. 192. The plaque can be attributed to the celebrated mosaicist Luigi Moglio of the Via del Babuino, who exhibited at the London 1851 Exhibition and in 1861 was granted the Insigne Artistica Congregazione Pontificia de' Virtuosi al Pantheon. Philip Eugene Ferdinand, Count of Flanders (1837-1905), son of Leopold I, was presented with the plaque by Pope Pius IX (d. 1878) during his visit to Rome in 1866.
