Lot Essay

The present bust is after Chinard's(d.1813) marble portrait of Madame Récamier, now in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Lyon. Madame Récamier was one of the most admired society beauties of her day and Chinard's portrayal of her, with its sensuous charm, quickly became one of his best known works.
