Alexandre Schoenewerk (d.1885) studied under David d'Angers, Jolliet and Triqueti and exhibited at the Salon annually between 1842 and 1885. He was a highly accomplished sculptor, winning first class medals in 1861, 1863 and 1878. He was commissioned to carry out large municipal works in stone, as well as executing many small genre pieces in bronze, of which this is a charming example.
