The present figure is after the Antique original recorded in the Vatican by 1509 and certainly in the Belvedere sculpture court by 1523. Much admired for its ideal beauty, copies were prized. Long considered to be a Greek original it is now thought to be a Roman copy, of the early Hadrianic period, of the Bronze Apollo by Leochares mentioned by both Pliny and Pausanias.
