A MINTON MAJOLICA DARK-BLUE-GROUND MERMAID WINE-JUG modelled after a Pompeiian original with a seated mermaid handle, her raised arms and shoulders entwining a strap issuing from the neck, suspending branches of ivy festooning her thighs and extending around the sides of the jug to be grasped by two relief-moulded naked putti, the ends of the branches entwining the horns of a Bacchus mask below the lip, the interior and base glazed in turquoise and the rim in yellow, impressed marks, model number 1420, date code for 1871 8¼in. (21cm.) high
