A GILT-METAL-MOUNTED SÈVRES-PATTERN DARK-BLUE-GROUND VASE AND COVER, the tapering oviform body painted by Maxant in a soft palette with a Roman warrior and a maiden standing beneath a gushing waterfall beside a statue of Diana and with a cherub above, the reverse with two playful cherubs holding garlands of roses and a torch among clouds, below a flared neck and on a spreading base richly gilt with a trophy and flowers flanked by scrolls and diaper-pattern, the cover similarly decorated, mounted with a pinecone finial, two scroll handles cast with chains of husks, a wreath of leaves encircling the lower body and on a shaped circular foot (base with crack and restoration, cover fixed), circa 1900
