Lot Essay

Luigi Grossi was born at Massa Carrara. He probably studied in Rome but in 1778 spent a year in Stockholm with Johann Tobias Sergel, followed by four years in Copenhagen where he worked as a modeller for the porcelain factory. In 1790 at Carrara he executed the tomb of Anna Sophie von Bulow for the castle at Reinhardsgrimma in Saxony. He died in Carrara in 1795.
