Lot Essay

These festive heads of a faun and vine wreathed bacchante relate to those of the Grecian figures featured on a chimney piece modelled by the sculptor John Bacon (d.1799), and illustrated no. 524/515 in Mrs Coade's stone, Worcs. , 1990, p.190.). Related Keystones are illustrated in an engraving of Coade's Lambeth kiln published in the European Magazine, 1786, and a related faun keystone in the authors's collection is illustrated in A.Kelly op.cit. p.158.
