Richard James Wyatt (d. 1850) was initially apprenticed to John Rossi R.A., went on to join the academy schools and became a protege of Sir Thomas Lawrence who introduced him to Canova while the latter was on a visit to England. In 1821 he moved to Rome and worked in Canova's studio until Canova's death the following year He spent the rest of his life in Rome and by the time of his own death he had become one of the most celebrated sculptors in the city.
