Lot Essay

The design of this commode with semi-circular form, floral swag inlay and splayed feet is taken from A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1788, p. 78. The text comments 'The panels may be of satinwood, or inlaid: the top and also the border round the front should be inlaid'. The urn-topped stiles are also taken from the design.
