Lot Essay

In the notes to the Wildenstein exhibition of 1957, Denys Sutton dates this painting as circa 1921 to 1925. Between 1921 and 1930 Derain painted many landscapes in Sanary, Lot, Bandol, La Ciotat, Cahors and Italy. The best of them have in common striking colour combinations and subtle light effects reminiscent of Cézanne and Corot whose landscapes Derain studied and particularly admired. Like the present painting, the most successful of these were painted in Provence. Amongst them include his Vue de St Maximin of 1930 in the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, and La Route of 1930-1 in the Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris.
