Lot Essay

Dr Marian Bisanz-Prakken of the Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna, notes that this drawing appears to relate stylistically to pencil studies executed for Hoffnung II (1907/08) (F. Novotny and J. Dobai, Gustav Klimt, Salzburg, 1975, no. 155), such as Strobl nos. 1758, 1764, 1777 and 1777a. Dr Bisanz-Prakken also comments that there is a thematic continuity between the present drawing and Klimt's 1905 Die Drei Lebensalter (op.cit, no. 48); in addition to the profile depiction of the female figure who, with her sunken head and closed eyes, is reminiscent of the figure Poesie in the 1902 Beethovenfries (ibid, no. 127).
