JAMES i (King of England, 1603-1625). FINE COLOURED INITIAL-PORTRAIT OF THE KING ON LETTERS PATENT, raising Sir Edward Rich to the peerage as Baron Kensington of Kensington in Middlesex. Westminster, 5 March 1622.
ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 490 x 635mm, in Latin, in brown ink in a chancery hand, FINE ILLUMINATED BORDER, containing the Royal Arms, peacocks and exotic birds, two coronets with lions, and coloured flowers. THE KING'S PORTRAIT WITHIN INITIAL 'J' of gold and blue strapwork design, showing James enthroned, in ermine-lined robe, against a purple scrolled background (initial approx. 180 x 150mm). (Seal lacking, tears and damage in vertical fold affecting 5 lines of text.).
Sir Henry Rich (1590-1649), first Baron Kensington, was created first Earl of Holland in 1624, captured at St. Neots and beheaded on 9 March 1649.
