The poem was printed for circulation among Wordsworth's friends. Grace Darling had died in 1842, and Wordsworth wrote to one of the recipients the he had been impelled to write the verses to present the contrast to the cruelty with which recent sufferers from shipwreck had been treated by the French. See Wise Two Lake Poets, p.43 recording this work as 'A few copies only were Privately Printed in March 1843'.
