André Messager (1853-1929) was a distinguished composer, conductor, adminstrator, organist, pianist and critic. Particulary renowned for his operettas, he was also a fine pianist and one of the foremost conductors of opera of the time and an early adherent of Wagner. His compositions include the opera Madame Chrysanthème of 1893, the earliest setting of Pierre Loti's story, later used by Puccini for Madame Butterfly. From 1898 to 1903, Messager was musical director of the Opéra Comique, where the first Parisian performance of La Bohème was given on 13 June 1898, three days after this copy was presented by the composer to Messager.
