Small 2° (281 x 194mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Whitman by Hollyer on thick paper. (Frontispiece, title and first three leaves slightly spotted.) Original green cloth, the upper cover with the title blocked in gilt surrounded by floral decoration and triple fillet border blocked in blind, the lower cover blocked in blind, the spine with title in gilt, yellow glazed endpapers (12mm. split to foot of upper joint), modern morocco-backed cloth box. Provenance: Alfred Theodore Rake (bookplate, dated 1895).
A VERY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, an early issue before the insertion of the 8pp. of press notices but after the deletion of much of the gilding on the binding and leaf edges.
