INDULGENCE -- Letter of confraternity, in Latin, issued by Johannes Cavalar on behalf of the Bethlehem Hospital at Bishopsgate. [London: J. Rastell,] 1519.

Oblong 4° (165 x 210mm). Gothic type in two fonts, 33 lines, fine woodcut of the Nativity in upper left-hand corner (66 x 39mm., otherwise identical to Hodnett 1331, known from Pynson's setting of the same indulgence). (Shaved at right-hand margin with loss of c.20mm. of text on each line, supplied in faint pencil, and just trimmed at top margin affecting edge of woodcut.) Mounted on paper, in modern cloth slipcase and morocco-backed folder. Provenance: Louis H. Silver (leather booklabel); Newberry Library of Chicago (by bequest); sold Sotheby's 8 November 1965, lot 167 (as a Pynson imprint); bought by Quaritch for Lord Kenyon (leather armorial bookplate).
