Title in red and black, small woodcut portrait of the dedicatee Wentzel Gommitzer, printer's device at end, 106 WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS only (of 114) BY JOST AMMAN, each approx 78 x 59mm., with letterpress title above and 8 lines of verse beneath, the verso of each blank, early interleaving, extra-illustrated with a shaped brown ink drawing on verso of c3 and a black ink drawing, initialled IAK.V, facing c4 verso. (Lacking F3, G1, N2, O2, O4, P1, Z3, d3, and final blank g4. B1 torn, repaired and backed, neat repair to inner blank margin of B4, occasional somewhat crude hand-colouring.) 18th-century sheep (neatly rebacked and recornered). Provenance: early manuscript titling (of all) and translations (of some) of the verses; 'Friderich M[?] Buchbinder' (?ownership inscription on verso of final leaf).
FIRST EDITION with the German verses of the shoe-maker poet and Amman's (1539-1591) important series of illustrations of various classes, professions and trades: from Pope to Fool, via Brewer, Weaver, Tailor, Bell-caster, Printer, etc. Despite their small size the cuts are lively and full of detail: Der Form schneider (the woodcutter) may well be a self-portrait.
