4° (220 x 170mm). One coloured double-page lithographic plate by J. Dubuffet. Dark-green morocco, the upper cover inlaid with large wood panel (the grain running vertically), inlaid irregularly with the title in cross-grained sections, the lower cover inlaid with large plain wood, flat spine with title inlaid in light brown morocco, author and illustrator in gilt, raffia doublures and liners, original covers and spine preserved, t.e.g., clear-plastic-backed chemise, slipcase, by P. L. Martin, dated 1959. Provenance: Paul Eluard (inscription); P.L. Martin (booklabel).

FIRST EDITION. Edition limited to 306 copies, 296 copies on B.F.K. de Rives paper, this one of 7 copies printed for friends. This copy for Paul Eluard WITH A SIGNED MANUSCRIPT POEM (not published in the book), a signed typescript of 'Les Charniers', and dedication on half-title from the author to Paul and Nuseh Eluard.
