The Vision of Ezekiel, after G.B.Bertani (B. 69; L. & L. 15)

engraving, 1554, first state (of six), a very fine and rich impression of this extremely rare state(L.& L. record only one other impression of this state in the British Museum), before the inscription on the tablet at the lower left, and before the text and any shading on the banderole held by the putti, printed on two sheets, the two halves remarkably uniform, with margins at the top and bottom, trimmed on or just inside the platemark at the left and right, an old central vertical and horizontal fold partly split and repaired, a further old vertical fold at the left edge, a few brown pen and ink additions just above the two skeletons in the centre to the right, a few nicks along the sheet edges, some staining and discolouration, a few other minor defects, backed
P. 414 x 679mm.

Lot Essay

Early impressions of this print are extremely rare. The present example is probably the only first state to have appeared on the market for many years. Apart from the impression in the British Museum, and the one from the Chatsworth Collection, (which in fact is an intermediate state between i and ii and which was sold in these rooms on 5 December 1985, lot 94), L.& L. only knew of one impression in the second state, in the Albertina. The example of the first state in the British Museum is also a very fine impression, printed with slightly more tone, but has been cut approximately 45mm. into the image on the left
