Lot Essay

Eunice Williams has, on the basis of a photograph, confirmed the attribution. She compares the drawing to A young Woman seated on a Chair in an American private collection which dates from the 1780s, E. Williams, Drawings by Fragonard in North American Collections, Washington, 1978, no. 56, illustrated. Despite the inscription the sitter is not Marguerite Gérard, the pupil and sister-in-law of Fragonard
