Jacob Dobbermann (1682-1745) was born in Kassel. He started to work in amber but he is known to have worked in ivory from at least 1737. A comparable rectangular relief of Hercules and Deianira, signed with initials 'J.D.', is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel.
