UPPER RHENISH, MID-15TH CENTURY
Carved with numerous courtly scenes, the underside with an inlaid games board, five brass loops attached to the sides, the hinged lid opening to reveal a velvet-lined interior.
Traces of gilding and polychromy; the hinged lock clasp later and broken; several minor elements replaced.

This box is related to a number of similar boxes now thought to be from the Upper Rhine region. A very similar example is in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore (Randall, loc. cit.).
