Lot Essay

Another stained glass panel, dated 1595 and representing the earlier scene of Tobias bidding farewell to his parents, sold in These Rooms on 17th July 1984, lot 78, seems to come from the same series of windows. Not only are the dimensions the same, but furthermore the whole organisation of the narrative scene, not to mention the decorative detail, is identical. In view of the fact that the present panel is dated eighteen years after the other one, it would appear that the series to which they belonged was commissioned over a considerable period of time.
