These reliefs, with their scenes of bacchic revelry, have appeared as decorative mounts on several important items of late 18th century French furniture. Among these, a variant pair of these reliefs appear on a clock and barometer designed for Marie-Antoinette's library at Versailles, supplied in the 1780's by Guillaume Beneman and Adam Weisweiler (Verlet, loc. cit.). Identical reliefs also appear on two cabinets in the Wallace Collection, and another pair in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace (Watson, loc. cit.).
The authorship of the reliefs has not been definitively decided. The panels of the Wallace cabinets are described in the 1956 catalogue as 'in the manner of Clodion' although they have since been tentatively attributed to Jean-François Forty, engraver, ciseleur, and author of Oeuvres d'Orfèvrerie à l'usage des églises of 1768. It is, however, also worth noting the strong similarity of these compositions with several biscuit reliefs produced during the period that Simon-Louis Boizot was director of the sculpture workshops at Sèvres (Bourgeois, loc. cit.). Whoever the author, it would appear that examples of the reliefs were supplied to the celebrated marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre, among whose effects were noted 'Deux petits bas relief rond en bronze réparés faits pour employer en panneaux de meubles sujets d'une femme et de deux enfants' (Segoura, loc. cit.).
