Lot Essay

The present pair of busts have been attributed to Foggini (1652-1725) on the basis of their similarity to documented works. In particular, the facial type of the Turk can be compared with the faces of Pluto and Boreas in the pendant groups The Rape of Proserpina by Pluto, and The Rape of Orithyia by Boreas, first mentioned in an exhibition catalogue of 1729 (Toronto, loc. cit).
