The present bronze model of a lion is ultimately derived from antique prototypes, and exists in a number of collections, including the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin, and the Irwin Untermyer Collection. In both these catalogues, the model is described as 'North Italian, first half 16th Century' and the present example was similarly described when it was sold from the Strauss Collection in 1977. It has since been suggested that the model may have originated later than was formerly supposed, for analogies can be found in the work of Tiziano Aspetti.
