Lot Essay

This general type of earring, showing winged Nike, is well-known in the Hellenistic world from Italy to Asia Minor. The flimsiness of the present pair probably points to funerary use; for gold foil funerary examples, cf. Sambon, no. 116. Also, cf. Marshall, nos. 1845-1848, p. 200, pl. XXXII
