AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE NECK AMPHORA, attributed to the Amasis Painter, circa 550 B.C.

Neck A and B: Dionysos presenting a drinking horn to Ariadne wearing decorated peplos with himation over her head and body, on either side dancing ithyphallic satyrs, added red and white detail

Side A: Warrior receiving his spear and helmet from a youth behind whom stands a female holding a spear and shield decorated with the foreport of a lion and a youth wearing fillet and chlamys, holding a spear in his right hand, a dog by his side. At the left an armed warrior, and before him a naked youth, wearing fillet and holding a spear, his right hand lowered, palm turned out. Added red and white detail

Side B: Warrior greaving whilst a youth hands him his spear and Corinthian helmet. Behind the youth stands a female holding a spear and shield with a device of a spread-winged swan. Behind her a youth, wearing fillet, chiton and himation, holding a spear. On the left, behind the warrior stands a youth with upraised arms, and another standing man holding a spear. Added red and white detail

Black dipinto beneath the foot and graffito

Condition: mended from several fragments, no major pieces missing. Overpainting at the breaks and third figure from the left on side A. Cleaned since 1980
