Lot Essay

The rectangular frame's cresting of a palmette-finialled bas-relief medallion that is supported by Apollo's griffins, emerging from Roman foliage in the arabesque manner, derives from an engraving published by R. and J. Adam in their Works in Architecture, 1774, vol. 1, no. II, pl. VIII.
The medallion's dancing vestal with a garland is in the manner of John Flaxman (see: R. Reilly, Wedgwood, London, vol. I, p. 585)
