Lot Essay

The design of these chairs derives from continental prototypes of the early 18th century and conforms to a pattern which was first seen in England in William de la Cour's First Book of Ornament, 1741. The immediate source for this design is probably Matthias Darly's Second Book of Chairs, 1751, pl.1. These designs re-appeared in the anonymous Chair-Maker's Guide of 1766
