Lot Essay

Stools of almost identical form were supplied by Gillows to Tatton Park, Cheshire, in 1812 (see: N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl. 22). A mahogany design for this stool occurs in the Gillow Estimate Sketch Book, 1827, no. 3568 as a Mahogany Grecian Dressing Stool with a price of #1 15s. A single stool of this model was sold from the collection of Michael Foljambe, Esq., from Osberton Hall, Nottingham, in these Rooms, 13 October 1988, lot 156. A further stamped pair were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 19 April 1990, lot 35
