Lot Essay

A signed watercolour study for the foreground is in the Prentenkabinet, Amsterdam (Welcker, op. cit., p. 255, no. T 18); a pencil study of a duck hunter in a related pose is in the same collection (ibid., p. 254, no.T 13, pl. XXV, fig. XLVI). A picture corresponding in description with the present work but with the size given as 20.5 x 35.9 was in an anonymous sale in Amsterdam, 19 May 1779, lot 3 (ibid., p.219, no. S 118)
