Lot Essay

The present picture belongs to a group of paintings identified by Professor Hans-Ulrich Beck as the work of the Monogrammist JvC on the basis of two similar landscapes bearing the monogram JvC, presumably a false Van Goyen monogram (H.-U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk, 1991, pp. 306-7, pls. 857 and 858)
