The event depicted in the present picture was of symbolic significance in the struggle to end Spanish domination in the Netherlands. On 4 November 1576, the Spanish, deciding to make an example of the rebellious city of Antwerp, entered the city and set fire to the newly built city hall. Two days of murder, looting and inquisition followed, ending the so-called 'Spanish Fury'
