Lot Essay

This gateway incorporates the left architrave block of the propylon of the reservoir of Hadrian outside Athens. The left hand side of the propylon stood as built until 1778 when the voivode (governor) Haseki caused a wall to be built around Athens, and re-used the architrave block as a lintel. The architrave block is now to be found in the National Gardens at Athens. The inscriptions record the names of those emperors who contributed to the reservoir's building expenses
