Lot Essay

The manor house at Lanhearne was the home of the Arundall family of Wardour from the 16th Century and remained a pocket of Roman Catholicism. In 1794 it became a convent for Carmelite nuns fleeing the French Revolution. The church, seen to the left, was built in the 13th Century with an additional aisle and tower in the 15th Century.

A distant view of the house and church seen from the other side,
11 3/8 x 18 5/8in., was sold at Sotheby's, 24 February 1960, lot 70, repr. Another version of this was in the Harris collection
