This early watercolour shows the influence of Varley's mentor, Thomas Girtin. Varley studied at Dr Thomas Monro's 'academy' from circa 1800 and joined the Sketching Club in 1802. In 1804, the date of this watercolour, he was a founder member of the Old Water Colour Society
