A RARE .297/.230 'MAGAZINE' LEE-ENFIELD MK1 1899 SERVICE PATTERN RIFLE, No. 216, by B. S. A., converted for use with the .297/.230 (Morris) Long centre-fire cartridge
30in. barrel, Birmingham proof, 12in. bayonet
The rifle, originally built for the .303 cartridge, is of standard specification and is fitted with the regulation service bayonet. The bolt cover is inscribed 'Supplied by W & H. E. Palmer, Gunmakers, Rochester'. The conversion of the service rifle for use with small bore ammunition dates back to the later years of the Martini-Henry rifle. The use of such weapons has always been regarded as a useful stepping stone in the training of recruits, who thus become used to the weight and dimensions of the standard service rifle and are able to learn the rudiments of good shooting. The original Morris cartridges lost favour in due course in face of the cheaper .22 rimfire ammunition
