Lot Essay

The footstool pattern incorporating a Grecian Ionic volute was inspired by a truss illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807, pl. XLIV. The pattern was invented by Matthew Gregson, F.S.A. (d. 1824), the highly successful cabinet-maker, upholsterer and interior designer of Preeson's Row, Liverpool. Around 1810 he collaborated in the furnishing of Speke Hall, Lancashire, with George Bullock of London and Liverpool and his design for this pattern of stool was discussed by Rudolph Ackermann in his Repository of Arts, October 1813, vol. 10, pl. 58, p. 232
Similar stools were sold in these Rooms, 12 October 1989, lot 64 and 8 March 1990, lot 58
