Lot Essay

The sitter was the only daughter of Benjamin Vigor of Fulham, Middlesex. She married John Carmichael, 3rd Earl of Hyndford (1700-1777), a celebrated diplomat, as his second wife in 1756, and sat for the present picture the following year. She died in 1807, aged eighty, at Carmichael House, Scotland.
