An old label attached to the reverse bears the following inscription: 'Black Mare/Taken to Spain in 1813 and went through the/whole of the Campaign with Col: James Buller/Elphinstone, was afterwards ridden at Luatre/Bras and Waterloo by Col. William Keith/Elphinstone when she was wounded and/lost, but afterwards recovered, and was alive at East Lodge, Enfield in 1836'
