cover TIENTSIN: 1900 (1 Sept.) envelope to Calcutta, marked "On Field Service no stamps available", backstamped with single-ring "F.P.O.NO.4" c.d.s. and sent on to Hong Kong where 1900 1a. was added and cancelled by large double-ring Base Office c.d.s.; flap missing and some small tone spots but a very scarce cover from troops quartered at a remote station. Under C.E.F. order number 942 such letters were carried free of charge to the nearest F.P.O. and then to Base Office where the stamps were added, the cost being charged to the state. Photo
