Edinburgh, 1759, maker's mark lacking

Bullet-shaped and on spreading circular foot, with poartly-fluted curved spout, hinged domed cover and bud finial, engraved with a coat-of-arms within a Rococo cartouche, marked under base, the cover unmarked - 6¼in. (16cm.) high
gross 25ozs. (793grs.)

The arms are those of Hope of Hopetoun probably for Charles Hope Vere (b.1710), younger son of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun

Lot Essay

The teapot is struck with the thistle in place of the usual initials of the Assay master. A practice which was in use from 1759 to 1760. Unusually for this date there is no maker's mark
