Lot Essay

'The propriety of including the Orphean Warbler in the present work is sanctioned by the example of our best, but, alas! departed, ornithologist - Mr Yarrell - who has given a figure and description of it in the second supplement to his History of British Birds.

'A History of British Birds' 1837-1843, second supplement 1856, by William Yarrell (1784-1856), illustrated by small wood-engravings, was then regarded by ornithologists as a standard textbook.

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds south Palaearctic from Iberia and northeast Africa eastwards to northwest India. Winters in the Sahel zone of the south Sahara and in India. Rare vagrant to Britain; five records from the first in 1848
