Lot Essay

The lower bird, a female, was drawn from a specimen found near Brighton racecourse in late 1868, and identified by Gould. Above is a male.

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds from southeastern Europe eastwards through to Iran and north to south Russia. Winters southeast to India. Rarely west to western Europe, including Britain, and some records may be escaped cagebirds
